EIA! The International Meeting of Anthropophagy will reflect upon the legacy of the anthropophagic philosophy - a creation of the Brazilian writer and thinker, Oswald de Andrade - and his importance for the contemporary world.

The concept of Anthropophagy will be approached, under several different perspectives, by anthropologists, literary critics, experts on religion, philosophers, historians, psychoanalysts, sociologists, artists and intellectuals.

Inspiring himself on the life style of some of the indigenous tribes in Brazil (before the “discovery”), Oswald de Andrade valued the primitive aspect and the Matriarchacy of Pindorama, by stating: “We already had communism. We already had the surrealistic language. The golden age. We had Politics, the science of distribution. And a planetary social system”

Starting from the anthropophagic rituals practiced by the Tupinambás in the pre-colonial period, and adding it up to his readings of Montaigne, Nietzsche, Freud and other thinkers, Oswald de Andrade (São Paulo, 1890–1954) created the cultural metaphor of Anthropophagy.

The publication of the “Manifesto Antropófago” (Anthropophagic Manifesto) in 1928 was a highlight in Brazilian cultural life after the Modern Art Week in 1922. Other artists also participated in the anthropophagic movement, such as Raul Bopp, Tarsila do Amaral and Patrícia Galvão, Pagu.

In the 60’s, the Tropicalismo – a movement that can be considered as an heir to anthropophagy - as well as the work of its main artists- (Tom Zé, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Hélio Oiticica, Zé Celso and the Oficina Theater), took over the Brazilian cultural and artistic scene. This movement helped spreading Brazilian art abroad and will be one of the main issues at EIA!

That’s exactly what the meeting wishes to be: a meeting. The program places side-by-side conferences by national and international experts, musical presentations, theatrical interventions and poetic readings. After the four days of the meeting, a multicultural celebration of the “mestiço” cooking in Brazil, with Bori d’Água, an anthropophagic banquet will be held.

A document will be created including the main ideas and proposals discussed during the event. The EIA! letter will be signed by artists and intellectuals throughout the world.

The International Anthropophagy Meeting is a production of SESC SP, with the general direction of the actor and director Zé Celso Martinez Correa, curated by the poet and composer Beatriz Azevedo.
